Following the meeting the SP chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, had with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, on Sunday, the SP general secretary, Amar Singh, today called on the senior Congress leader, Arjun Singh. Briefing correspondents later, Amar Singh said he had placed his party's assessment of the political turmoil in the State. His party had no role in the revolt by a section of the BJP and independent MLAs and said the dissidence was more on account of the contradictions in the ruling coalition. Amar Singh denied that Ms. Gandhi had suggested that the SP should convince the Congress on the number of MLAs supporting the "toppling move". Arjun Singh said the Congress had not yet held discussions on the U.P. situation.
