Anand to meet Moreno in pre-quarterfinals

Bled Nov. 2. FIDE World Cup winner and two-time defending champion Viswanathan Anand has set up a pre-quarterfinal meeting with Spanish International Master Carnero Moreno in the knock-out stage of the 6th Corsica Masters at Bastia in France.

Anand, who won four games and drew five games to qualify for the last 16 stage in this 20,000 Euro first prize event on Thursday, will play two games to decide on who will advance into the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, the seeds who did not make it to the last 16 from the 122-player qualifier held on Thursday included Rafael Vaganian (Arm), Joel Lautier (Fra), Alexander Onischuk (Ukr) and last year's finalist Alexander Chernin (Hun).

The pre-quarterfinal pairings: V. Anand (Ind) v Carnero Moreno (Esp), Vadim Milov (Sui) v Artur Yusupov (Ger), Milos Pavlovic (Yug) v Mikhail Gurevich (Bel), Mikhail Brodsky (Ukr) v Alexey Dreev (Rus), Anatoly Karpov (Rus) v Yuri Zezulkin (Blr), Igor Glek (Ger) v Vladislav Tkachiev (Fra), Vladimir Epishin (Ger) v Murtas Kazhgaleyev (Kaz), Alexei Shirov (Esp) v Viktor Mikhailevski (Isr). — Our Chess Correspondent.
