Gujarat
By Our Special Correspondent
The party has decided on a twin-pronged approach for its election campaign a positive push promising Sukh, Shanti, Samruddhi aur Salamat (Happiness, peace, prosperity and well-being) for the people of the State and targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party and its Government for its failure on all fronts. The AICC general secretary, Kamal Nath, incharge of party affairs in the State, told a press conference here that the Congress was confident it would dislodge the `corrupt and inept' BJP Government led by Narendra Modi. "Gujarat deserves better governance,'' he asserted. Mr. Nath was flanked by the Gujarat Pradesh Congress chief, Shankarsinh Waghela, and senior leaders from the State, including the former Chief Minister, Amarsinh Chaudhary, Urmilaben Patel, Ahmed Patel and Naresh Rawal, at the conference. He also promised that the Congress would set up special courts in the State to try members of the current Government associated with scams, especially the controversial failure of 15 cooperative banks, misappropriation of relief supplies and funds earmarked for victims of natural calamity. He charged that there was a BJP link in these cooperative banks failure and that it had affected 20 lakh people directly and another 80 lakh indirectly. He termed the BJP Government attempt to take action by filing FIRs a `sham'. Mr. Waghela charged that the State was pushed into an economic mess with the Government having resorted to overdraft on 21 occasions and facing an empty treasury. He demanded that the Modi Government make public the reports of Intelligence Bureau, which had forewarned the possibility of the Godhra carnage and the attack on temples in Gujarat. He charged that the BJP Government was not interested in protecting innocent lives or preventing such incidents. Mr. Chaudhary charged that the caretaker Modi Government was `misusing' official machinery. "He has money for campaign but not for relief work in drought-hit villages of the State''.
Talks on with secular parties
On the issue of arriving at an understanding with secular parties ahead of the elections, Mr. Nath said that Gujarat Congress leaders were holding talks at the local level with the Nationalist Congress Party, the Samajwadi Party, the Lok Janshakti and Left parties. He said that since all the parties agreed on the one point defeating the BJP what was important was the intent and not a question of number of seats for contest.
