Cabinet reshuffle next month?

New Delhi Nov. 3. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, plans to undertake a major Cabinet reshuffle next month to accommodate rebel BJP MLAs and others as part of a deal to contain dissidence and ensure the stability of the BJP-BSP coalition, highly-placed BJP sources said here today.

While several MLAs would be "adjusted" in the Council of Ministers, others would be "accommodated" in various State Government Corporations and undertakings, they said.

A decision in this regard was taken at the party's highest levels, following parleys the senior leaders, Kushabhau Thakre, Rajnath Singh and Kalraj Mishra, had with the rebels. The "package" to placate the dissidents also came up for discussion at a recent meeting of the BJP's central election committee, presided over by the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, here, they said.

The reshuffle had been planned for December as any such action immediately would send a "wrong message" that the party had surrendered to the rebels, the sources said. Some Independents had also been promised Cabinet berths to wean them away from the Samajwadi Party camp. Some BSP legislators were also likely to be inducted into the Council of Ministers to prevent the dissidence from spreading. — PTI
