Vishwanathan Anand
Karpov received 12,000 Euros as being the losing finalist. In the finals, Karpov took the lead by winning the first white game when he advanced his queen knight pawn and induced a dubious rook sacrifice from Anand to keep the material and win. In the reverse game, Anand spotted a blunder and won a root pawn with a knight using a pin to level the match 1-1. After two first tie break games were drawn, Anand took the lead in the second pair of tie-break games and he kept that by checkmating Karpov in the reverse blitz game for a 4-2 win. This year the fielded included a tougher pool but it did not make any difference to Anand who won smoothly till the finals and in the finals itself he showed tremendous resilience to come from behind to defeat 51-year old Karpov 1-1 in rapid chess, 1-1 in the first tie-break and 2-0 in the final blitz tie-break. Anand who won the World Cup at Hyderabad in October this year has had an unprecedented year winning most of the major competitions. He won the EuroTel Trophy at Prague ahead of Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik and Anatoly Karpov in May and followed that up with a 4.5-3.5 match win against the world champion Ruslan Ponomariov at Frankfurt. His engagements for the year are not yet complete as he is playing a few German league games for Baden OS. The major events Anand has signed up to play include the two super category tournaments at Wijk aan Zee, Linares and the Amber Chess Tournament at the start of 2003.
