Jamshedpur, located on the banks of Subarnarekha in Jharkhand, and also known as the `Steel city' was founded in 1907 to exploit the extensive coal and iron ore deposits in the area. The ground, on which the Keenan Stadium is built, has hosted first-class matches since the time when host Bihar took on neighbour Bengal in a Ranji Trophy encounter in December 1939. Since its first Limited Over International match on December 7, 1983, when the host lost by 104 runs to a rampaging West Indies, the home team has won just one match against South Africa on 12-3-2000. India in all have lost four matches here out of the six played by them (one match against the Australians had to be abandoned in 1984, since the teams playing kit could not arrive on time from Calcutta). Pakistan and Sri Lanka are the only teams to have played a match here (in 1999) without involving the home team. West Indies' 333 for 8 in just 45 overs in 1983 remains the highest team score, while South Africa's 199 in 2000 is the lowest at this ground. Vivian Richards' 149 in just 99 balls in 1983 is the highest individual score at this venue, while left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi's 4 for 38 in 10 overs against South Africa in 2000 has the best bowling figures. In the seven matches played at the Keenan Stadium, batsmen with an overall aggregate of 2596 runs and @ an average of 32.86 and a strike rate of 81.69 runs per 100 balls have an upper hand over the bowlers.
