The big black eye of a `boodhakanam,' (demon) and a lotus atop the tower over the sanctum sanctorum of `Mukkuruni' Vinayagar, got chipped off. The architecturally-rich temple tower, however, suffered no further damage. According to the executive officer, P. Bhaskaran, the damage was ``minor'' and would be rectified in a day or two. ''Already the works have started.'' The 69-foot tower is dwarfed by five major towers, which are rich with statues and stucco figures. The temple has 14 towers, five of them `rajagopurams.' The tower, which suffered damage, was built in 1559 by Siramalai Sivanthimurthi. It was renovated at a cost of Rs. 2.05 lakhs in 1975. The works included fresh painting and repairs to the damaged statues and figures in the tower. Mr. Bhaskaran said all five `rajagopurams' had `lightening arresters.' Experts from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the Public Works Department, who inspected the damage, ruled out lightning attack as reported in a local Tamil daily. ``The `chunnam' (lime with cement mix), which serves as the base material, got peeled off, possibly in persistent rain. It can be rectified easily,'' they said.
