Tamil Nadu
By T. Ramakrishnan
It will be followed by three more sessions, one each in Coimbatore (November 11), Madurai (November 13) and again in the city (November 18). In Chennai, the two hearings will be held at the mini-auditorium of the Music Academy; in Coimbatore, the venue is the Agricultural University campus and, in Madurai, the Collectorate. To be conducted by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, the hearings are open to the public to express their comment on the proposal made by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. Officials of the TNEB are expected to be present to clarify SERC doubts. The proposal has attracted serious objections from different segments of consumers. Opposition parties and farmers' organisations have opposed the TNEB move to scarp free power supply to farmers and for huts, saying it will deal another blow to the farming community, which is already suffering because of drought and low returns. Industry bodies including those for small sector units have argued that the SERC should not allow any further tariff increase as the industry has been rendered uncompetitive, having all along been made to cross-subsidise other categories of consumers. Advocacy groups, representing the domestic category, have stated the TNEB will have to improve customer service and be transparent and people-friendly in its functioning, before proposing any tariff hike.
