Both DMK and MDMK functionaries here were surprised and confused at the Karunanidhi meeting and the message it conveyed. Trying to downplay it, Mr. Karunanidhi told the media: "There is no political significance in my meeting Vaiko". Answering questions in his hotel room, he attributed the meeting to a ``brotherly relationship'', which was deeper than political ties. Asked whether there was any possibility of the MDMK merging with the DMK, he retorted: ``This question is needless when I have already stated that there is no political significance in the meeting.'' He said Mr. Vaiko enquired about him and his family members' health especially of the Union Minister, Murasoli Maran. Claiming that the DMK would not insist on the release of Mr. Vaiko, arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for his pro-LTTE speech, Mr. Karunanidhi said the MDMK leader was experiencing the consequences of misuse of the POTA. Even at the time it was introduced by the National Democratic Alliance Government, the DMK pointed out that the Act would be misused by the likes of the AIADMK regime. ``The subsequent events only proved us right.'' ``When the Centre has not taken any action, what action can I speak of'', Mr. Karunanidhi retorted when he was asked about its not doing anything either in connection with his arrest or that of Mr. Vaiko. On the Centre dismissing pleas for intervention in matters of vindictive action against leaders of NDA constituents, on the ground that they pertained to State Governments, Mr. Karunanidhi said, ``we will tackle issues arising out of the actions of the State Governments''. The DMK chief was non-committal on the possibility of a realignment in the State in the light of the Opposition parties coming together on common issues the law to curb forcible conversions and the fallout of fiscal reforms both inside and outside the Assembly. "Let us see when the situation arises", he replied to a question.
