Dalits beaten up

Panipat Nov. 5. Close on the heels of the lynching of five Dalits for allegedly skinning a cow in Haryana, three more persons of the community were beaten up in another village of the State and handed over to the police on similar allegations before the village elders today found them not guilty.

The three, all residents of Chamra village in Panipat district, were caught allegedly skinning a calf on Sunday.

They were beaten up by villagers before being handed over to the police.

A "panchayat" of leading citizens of area today ``unanimously'' resolved that the Dalits were not guilty as the calf was already dead, the Haryana Assembly Speaker, Satbir Kadian said.

Following the "panchayat's" ruling, the three were released, police sources said.

The incident comes just 20 days after the killing of the five Dalits in Dulina village of Jhajjar district for allegedly skinning a cow. — PTI
