DMK politicising suicide: Thambi Durai

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Nov. 5. The Education Minister, M. Thambi Durai, has criticised the DMK for offering a solatium of Rs.50,000 to a teacher's family in the Machalaru panchayat (Theni district), who committed suicide. The Minister said the teacher, Abdul Sattar, had ended his life for personal reasons, as was revealed by a suicide note and some medical records found in the house. He was also disenchanted that his wife had left him. But the DMK was ``making a cheap attempt to gain political advantage'' trying to link the incident with a now-withdrawn strike by teachers and government staff. While the Chief Minister's firm handling of the strike made the teachers return to work, the DMK offered solatium without knowing the real facts behind the incident. While the money offered could help the family of the deceased teacher, the DMK act was only an attempt to politicise the issue, Mr. Thambi Durai said.

Aid to HM's kin

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Elementary School Teachers' Federation has announced a grant of Rs. 1 lakh to the family of a headmaster who immolated himself in Pollachi, during the strike by teachers and government staff last week.

The headmaster of the Nambiyamuthur union elementary school, M. Kasipandiyan, left a note saying he was giving up his life, to highlight the teachers' demand that the government to hold talks with the strikers, according to the federation general secretary, S. Anbazhagan. The deceased left three daughters and his wife.
