Sir, The Chief Election Commissioner, J. M. Lyngdoh's statement that diplomats will be permitted to monitor the Gujarat elections (Nov. 1) is neither warranted nor desirable. When some developed countries wanted to monitor the Jammu and Kashmir elections, Mr. Lyngdoh told them that the days of the "white" monitoring the "black" were over and that the West should get out of its colonial mindset. He subsequently allowed observers to assess the quality of the elections in the larger interest of the country. But Gujarat is not Jammu and Kashmir. The nation has faith that the Election Commission will conduct free and fair elections in Gujarat. B. J. Krishnan, Udhagamandalam, T.N.
