dated November 7, 1952: New Mayor of Madras

At the first ordinary meeting of the newly elected City Council held on the 4th at Ripon Buildings, the nominee of the Congress Municipal Party, Mr. T. Chengalvaroyan was unanimously elected Mayor of Madras for the year 1952-53. Replying to felicitations, the new Mayor hoped to organise civic associations in every division of the City and also to raise a civic volunteer corps, at least one-lakh strong, to tackle and find proper, lasting solutions to public health problems in the city. Mrs. Saraswathi Pandurangam, also of the Congress Party, was unanimously elected Deputy Mayor.

Mr. Janakiram Chetti, requesting Mr. Chengalvaroyan to occupy the Mayoral chair, said that it was his privilege to extend his heartfelt congratulations to the new incumbent, who was the first Mayor of a City Council to be elected on the basis of adult franchise. Expressing confidence that Mr. Chengalvaroyan would fill the Mayoralty with distinction and dignity, he added a request that the new Mayor should devote his attention in the coming year to the improvement of low-lying areas subject to rain and other ills, slums, and other undeveloped parts of the City. He also suggested that measures be taken to revive the City Cleaning Campaign, which had been inaugurated and implemented by Mr. Satyamurthi. The task before them was improvement of the water supply system in the City.
