This Day That Age
Officers and men of the 8,000-ton s.s. "Indian Endeavour" of the Indian Steamship Company of Calcutta had observed in the dark of the calm Arabian Sea unusual luminous objects on the water producing a phosphorescent glow seen for several hours on their voyage to the United Kingdom from India. As the vessel was speeding at ten knots towards Aden from Cochin, the glowing objects were observed continuously for about six hours in "isolated patches". The ship's officials said they might have been "noctiluca" a small, nearly spherical marine animalcule emitting a phosphorescent appearance. Every time the ship entered one of the patches, the bow of the ship caused brilliant waves, the light of which threw shadows of the superstructure on the deck of the port and starboard sides of the freighter.
