Security was good, says Match Referee

JAMSHEDPUR NOV. 6. The Match Referee, Mr. Mike Procter, surprisingly gave a clean chit to the security measures at the Keenan Stadium even as he announced that he would write to the International Cricket Council regarding the crowd trouble that marred the first one-day international between India and the West Indies here on Wednesday.

Mr. Procter said "it was a difficult match. And a bit disturbing. I'll certainly send report to the ICC. Crackers and mini bombs were going off. It was very scary. But the teams were very professional and wanted to carry on. The security was good and the crowd trouble was controlled. I'll discuss it (security) for the forthcoming matches.''

The West Indies skipper Carl Hooper was disappointed with the crowd behaviour. "We've seen this in India before and it's disappointing it has happened again.''

India skipper Sourav Ganguly was obviously disappointed. "283 was a big total. It was a good match. Ajit (Agarkar) batted brilliantly. He'll bat number three again.''

On the team's performance, Ganguly said "we're not superhuman. Can lose once in a while. The spinners had a bad day. Sarwan played an outstanding innings.''

Ganguly also had a word of encouragement for Jai Prakash Yadav, who had a poor debut. "He didn't get enough opportunities.''

Hooper summed up the victory "I'm quite happy. We batted well. The target was gettable. The pitch played better than it looked.'' Hooper praised Sarwan, Wavell Hinds and Marlon Samuels, terming them "good for the future.'' — Our Special Correspondent
