U.S. Embassy officials, boy rescued by Army rafters

NEW DELHI NOV. 6. Three officials of the United States Embassy and an American boy were rescued last week by Indian Army rafters at Shivpuri. The Americans were rafting in a commercially hired raft in the Ganga. While negotiating a rapid, their raft flipped and the rafters were thrown into the river.

As they were being swept away in the icy cold current of the Ganga, P. Raghu of the Army jumped from his raft and pulled out the boy, William Puyatt, to safety. Other army rafters, led by their officers, Vishal Ahlawat and Sharif Mizanur Rehman, rescued the three U.S. embassy Employees — Matt Lowe, Geoffrey and Eden White.

The second joint Indo-Bangladesh Army river rafting expedition was flagged off by the Uttranchal Chief Minister, N.D. Tiwari, at Dehradun on Tuesday. The expedition is being led by G.S. Mungali of the India and Mizanur Rehman of Bangladesh is the deputy leader.
