Matric schools can't admit students to Tamil medium sections

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI NOV. 6. In pursuance of its policy decision to close down parallel Tamil medium sections run by matriculation schools, the Government has barred all matriculation schools from admitting students to Tamil medium sections in Standards VI-XII from the next academic year.

However, students now studying in Tamil medium in standards IX, X, XI and XII will be allowed to appear for X and XII public examinations in 2003 and 2004, according to a recent communication from the Director of Matriculation Schools circulated among the heads of the institutions.

The Government, in an order issued in September, ordered the closure ``after it was brought to its notice that some matriculation schools had opened Tamil medium sections against the provisions of the code of regulations, thereby reducing the strength in Tamil medium schools.''

The Government also asked the Director to take action for closing the Tamil medium sections in a phased manner to ensure that the matriculation schools remained ``a distinct entity offering only English as the medium.''

The latest guidelines, contained in the proceedings of the Director, came in pursuance of the GO, official sources said.

According to the directive, students now studying in standard XII would be allowed to take the examination in 2003 through the Tamil medium.

Similarly, Tamil medium students in standard XI would be allowed to pursue Standard XII though the Tamil medium during 2003-04, and write the public examinations during February-March 2004. Tamil medium students in Standards X and IX will be allowed to write Standard X public examinations, to be held in 2003 and 2004. No admission shall be made to Tamil medium sections in Standards VI, VII, VIII, IX, X and XI from 2003-04.

Those studying in Standards VI, VII and VIII now have been advised to switch to either Tamil medium schools, which follow the State board syllabus from 2003-04, or English medium sections in matriculation schools.
