Cent per cent literacy by 2012, says Rangasamy

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Nov. 8. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, said today that the task before his government was to ensure universal access to primary education and to achieve cent per cent literacy by 2012. The primary stage of education had been given priority so as to achieve cent per cent enrolment and zero per cent dropout at the primary level.

Participating at a two-day meeting of Chief Ministers of Congress-ruled States at Mt. Abu (Rajasthan), he dwelt on the achievements of his government.

In his three-page report he said that there was no communal disturbance anywhere in the Union Territory. He was, however, keeping a close vigil to ensure that no untoward incidents occurred.

While the Central Government had assessed that there were 65,000 families living below poverty line in the Union Territory, the survey conducted by the Pondicherry Administration found nearly 90,000 families and decided to supply subsidised rice to all of them. The expenditure on providing rice to the additionally identified families was being met from the State budget. Rice was being supplied at Rs. 4 a kg. against the Central issue price of Rs. 5.65 per kg.

With the government practising financial discipline of a very high order, every care was taken to ensure that revenue receipts matched with expenditure.

He expressed hope that the Union Territory would achieve 10.5 per cent growth rate in the Gross Domestic Product in the Tenth Plan as fixed by the Planning Commission for Pondicherry.

Mr. Rangasamy also pointed out that he had taken utmost care to provide a clean and transparent administration and since he assumed office on October 27 last, recruitments had been made only through competitive examinations and selection was done on merit.

He said civic elections would be held shortly, as his government was committed to conducting the polls.

A copy of his address at the Mt. Abu meeting was distributed to mediapersons by the office of Chief Minister here today.
