Row over idols' immersion turns violent, 20 hurt

Baharampur (West Bengal) Nov. 8. Twenty persons, including six police personnel, were today injured in a clash between police and a mob, which ransacked the Lalbagh police station in Murshidabad district in protest against forcible immersion of Kali idols.

The Superintendent of Police, Virendra, told reporters that organisers of 10 puja committees in the area attacked the station as police themselves immersed the idols in the Ganga on Thursday, following refusal by the organisers to meet the deadline for immersion.

The organisers ransacked the station, smashed its furniture, tore off telephone wires and damaged three vehicles. They threw stones at police injuring six constables, he said. — PTI
