The Chief Minister today reviewed the functioning of the Power and Finance Departments. The review process would also include the spendings by these departments on the various Plan schemes and budgetary allocations made to them. "There are some hiccups in certain departments which need to be set right. This is the reason why reviews are being carried out. I want to have a first hand knowledge of what has been achieved and where all we are lacking so that necessary remedial measures can be undertaken,'' the Chief Minister said. During the review of the Power Department, attended by the representatives of the two private companies and heads of Transco and Genco. Also present was the Power Minister, Ajay Maken. During the meeting, the Chief Minister directed Transco to put in order all the 220kv and 400 kv lines in order to make quality power available to the Capital during the winter and summer season. The officials were asked to augment the capacity of the 220 kv lines from 5,000 mva at present to 5,500 mva by December end and 6,000 mva by end of March. Ms. Dikshit also said that it was important that the 220 kv and 400 kv systems, having eight grid stations, were put in place so that the two private companies were able to provide power, uninterrupted and qualitative to the residents of the Capital. At the same time, the Chief Minister stressed the need to ensure that all tie-ups for making power available during the summer season were taken care of during the next two to three months so that there was no shortfall during the peak summer season. The Chief Minister told the representatives of the two private companies that they should provide an opportunity to the consumers of JJ clusters and other such areas to get legal power connections before embarking on any exercise to disconnect power or penalise them for theft. The Chief Minister said she had also taken the review of the Sales Tax, Excise, Entertainment Tax, Planning and other related revenue Departments in order to ensure that all the revenue targets were met. The Sales Tax Department had been asked to pull up its socks and increase the efficiency levels in order achieve the targeted growth. At the same time, the Chief Minister felt that a lot of emphasis should be laid on voluntary compliance by traders and the various associations in order to shore up the tax collections. The Chief Minister said it was important that the Sales Tax Department increased its level of interactions with the trade associations and the business chambers in order to meet the revenue targets. But at the same time, she said, no harassment of the traders or businessmen would be tolerated. She also emphasised on the need to recover the arrears pending for along time and settle the hundreds of crores that are locked in legal disputes.
