Private sector has major role in health care: CM

KOLLAM Nov. 14. The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, said here today that while the service rendered at Government hospitals in the State was not up to the mark mainly on account of financial constraints, the State Government would not run away from the health care sector.

Inaugurating the year-long Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Holy Cross Hospital at Kottiyam near here, he said that considering the constraints faced by the Government, the private sector had a major role to play in the health service arena.

He said that the encouragement given by the Government to the private sector in this field should not be construed as a signal to convert the health sector into a profit-spinning industry.

The Chief Minister said that the Holy Cross Hospital had in all respects remained a model in the health service sector.

The Chief Minister said that the aim of the Government was to convert the State into a professional education destination in the country. "It is with this intention that all eligible applicants are being given sanction to open and run professional educational institutions," he said.

He said that the Holy Cross Hospital had been sanctioned a nursing college which was inaugurated on the occasion by the Electricity Minister, Kadavur Sivadasan. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the jubilee block of the hospital.

The Vojta therapy unit of the hospital was inaugurated by the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran. The Health Minister, P. Shankaran, presided over the function. The Kollam Bishop, Stanley Roman, delivered the benedictory address. Earlier, the Provincial Superior of the Holy Cross Order, Josepha Kandathil, welcomed the gathering and the hospital administrator, Fides Thottan, read the report.

The Kollam MP, P. Rajendran, Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan and Pratapavarma Thampan, MLAs and the District Panchayat president, K. Devaki, addressed the gathering.
