India will use nukes if threatened: Kalam

New Delhi Nov. 14. Notwithstanding the ``no first use'' policy, India will use nuclear weapons when peace is threatened and some other country uses them against it, the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, said today.

``We have taken a decision that India will not use nuclear weapons first but when peace is threatened and somebody else uses it, India will use it for defending the country,'' Dr. Kalam said in reply to a question from a student on how nuclear weapons can be used for peace. `

`When two of our neighbours have got nuclear weapons, naturally for India, to protect peace, we have to have it.''

The President mingled with the children at the Vigyan Bhavan here, answering questions on his vision for India, the development of the northeast and how to stop brain drain.
