Buses plying to Koyambedu terminus will run on modified route

By S.Shivakumar

CHENNAI NOV.14. Some of the buses plying to the new central moffusil bus terminus at Koyambedu will run on a modified route plan when the facility opens on Monday, it was decided by the police today.

The decision followed impending chaos several localities at Virugambakkam, Nesapakkam and K.K.Nagar face as they are either heavily encroached upon or the road space is limited due to largescale digging activity by the Metrowater.

Heavy bus traffic was envisaged through some of the congested routes cutting across Arcot Road, Nesapakkam and K.K.Nagar, before entering Inner Ring Road towards the South. Narrow roads such as Kaliamman Koil Street brought the plan into serious question, and the police, led by the Joint Commissioner, G.U.G. Sastry, conducted a spot study today. A series of modifications followed later.

Under the revised scheme, the State Transport Corporation buses to the north and the south would take the Irumbuliyur NH by-pass, and not the Nesapakkam - K.K. Nagar route as decided earlier. The State Express Transport Corporation buses, however, would take the Inner Ring Road.

That would leave some problems on the traffic policing front to be tackled, between Vadapalani and Ekattuthangal, and restoration of neglected stretches of the Inner Ring Road between these points.

Road safety experts point out that the buses would have to be operated with caution on the stretch, as it has many school zones. Already, lorry and container truck traffic made it dangerous for other road users to venture here.

The question of improving the four km stretch of EVR Salai between the Koyambedu bus terminal and the Maduravoyal-Tambaram bypass, however, is yet to be addressed, despite a date being set for opening of the facility.

The EVR Salai stretch will be critical for the success of the project as it handles a high volume of traffic.

Presently, this stretch is full of potholes and encroachments leading to frequent snarls on the national highway.
