The Union Environment Ministry has cleared a project to help create awareness on water management and rain water harvesting in four major slums in Chennai. The project would be taken up by the Chennai-based Centre for Women Development and Research at a cost of Rs. 7 lakhs under the Small Grants Programme funded by the Ministry and the Global Environment Facility.
Announcing this, a Ministry spokesperson said the Steering Committee for the Programme, which met here on Friday, also gave its nod for a project to help conserve indigenous animal breeds in six major centres in Tamil Nadu Madurai, Virudhunagar, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi, Nilgiris, and Erode. The project would be undertaken by SEVA (Sustainable Agriculture and Environment Action) at a cost of Rs. 13.5 lakhs. In addition, the panel headed by the Joint Secretary, Rajiv Kher, cleared a proposal for provision of alternative employment opportunities for workers engaged in the production of Shatoosh shawls, made by killing `chiru', an endangered animal in Jammu and Kashmir, and a proposal to promote alternative livelihood for the local people in the buffer zone of Suhelwa sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh.
