This Day That Age
The New York Herald Tribune criticised the United States delegation to the United Nations for having acted with "unnecessary haste and harshness" in turning down Indian proposals for a solution to repatriation of Korean prisoners of war. In a leading article, it said, "The Indian proposals had been turned down before they had been normally set forth by Indian representatives", and it announced with a rather shattering finality a split with the British representatives. This hardly seems the conduct of a great and self-confident power, but rather of men who have grown tired and nervous in their jobs. The American delegation has been inflexible and dogmatic in insisting "that particular amendments be adopted or the whole scheme be abandoned. Basically the trouble must be set down as one example of the strains caused by the change over of administration. It will be under Republicans that these arrangements would be implemented and worked out; and one can sense the fear of the outgoing Democrats that they will be held responsible for any loopholes of which the Communists may later take advantage." The editorial took the view that the position of the free nations of the world had not been compromised at any stage of the discussion at the U.N.
