Sonia urges PM to expedite river grid project

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI NOV. 27. The Leader of the Opposition, Sonia Gandhi, has written to the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, urging him to expedite the completion of the national river grid project as also the techno-economic feasibility study and the finalisation of the national perspective plan. She suggested the formation of a high-level task force.

Ms. Gandhi said that since the project would involve the interests of all the regions, the Government should take the Opposition into confidence at every step. Welcoming Mr. Vajpayee's announcement on the national river grid project, she said "the Congress has, in the past, carried forward the concept of a national river grid and continues to stand squarely behind it.'' She pointed out that the national river grid had first been announced by K. L. Rao, who was a member of Jawaharlal Nehru's Cabinet. And that the National Water Development agency, and the National Commission for Integrated Water Resources Development were set up under the Congress Governments in 1980,1982 and 1999.
