Cricket
A six-wicket victory with 47 balls to spare emphasised the Railway domination in a match that proved quite an anti-climax. The round-robin league involving seven teams was expected to culminate in a heady fashion but a poor pitch, some inconsistent umpiring and a disjointed performance from Air-India, winner of the trophy for the last three years, gave the title to Railways on a platter. Set a target of 144, Railways was rarely in trouble. It cruised to its destination through a delightful innings by Mithali Raj after the bowlers had exploited the conditions earlier. Mithali knocked off an unbeaten 51 off 67 balls with eight fours while left-handed opener Jaya Sharma carved a responsible 36 with four fours. Air-India failed to produce a meaty partnership to give the innings the required direction. Barring skipper Anjum Chopra, 34 with one four, no other batswoman made an impact on the opposition even though the Air-India camp was disappointed with the decision that ended opener Purnima Rau's stay. Air-India never recovered from that early blow and struggled to post 143 for eight in the stipulated 50 overs. Railways lost Sunetra Paranjape cheaply but Mithali swept the opposition with some exceptionally well-timed strokes. She revelled in playing the straight drives and the winning hit, an effortless boundary to the sightscreen, was a confirmation of her calibre. The Hyderabad girl ensured there were no alarms in the Railway camp with a flurry of boundaries that took the fight out of the Air-India attack. In other matches, West Zone defeated North Zone by 37 runs and South Zone beat Central Zone by 42 runs. Team position: 1. Railways, 2. Air-India, 3. South Zone, 4. West Zone, 5. North Zone, 6. Central Zone, 7. East Zone. The scores: Air-India 143 for eight in 50 overs (Anjum Chopra 34) lost to Railways 144 for four in 42.1 overs (Mithali Raj 51 not out, Jaya Sharma 36). South 202 for five in 50 overs (Savita Nirala 58 not out, Karuna Jain 46, Mamta Maben 32, Priti Dimri three for 23) bt Central 160 for seven in 50 overs (Babita 54, Ranjana 31). West 175 for nine in 50 overs (Aarti Vaidya 44, Ravinder Kaur three for 22) bt North 138 in 44.4 overs (Asha Rawat 50, Seema Pujari five for 21).
