Powar, Salvi put Mumbai on top

Mumbai Nov. 28. Mumbai is in the driving seat in the Elite Group A match of the Ranji Trophy championship against Andhra. A combination of factors saw the home team first recover and then dictate terms.

At stumps on the second day, Andhra's first innings was tottering at 79 for five wickets, replying to Mumbai's 403.

First, the ninth wicket pair of Ramesh Powar (104, 264 mts, 150 b, 10 x 4s, 2 x 6s) and Nilesh Kulkarni (54, 173 mts, 144 b, 7 x 4s, 1 x 6) delivered the surprise in the form of a 131 runs and later lanky and promising seamer Avishkar Salvi struck three blows and take his form into the third match of the season.

A third victory in as many matches should come Mumbai's way either on Friday or Saturday. After making a poor start in the away fixture in Hyderabad, Mumbai showed its fighting qualities; its bowlers hitting back and eventually helping their team gain full points. It was Ajit Agarkar's allround showing that paved the for Mumbai's win against Delhi at the Wankhede in the second week of November.

Taking the field with four specialist batsmen was a gamble. But thereafter a couple of allrounders played their roles to near perfection. Robin Morris fired a quick 52 and Vinayak Samant made an attacking 84. But off break bowler Powar, called upon to show his batting prowess, responded in fine fashion notching his maiden first class century in nearly four and half hours. Powar's ally was left arm spinner Kulkarni; he mustered strength and showed courage to make a half century.

After Mumbai was bowled out post lunch, Andhra survived the opening spell of Salvi, not by any measure hostile. But Mumbai' latest find, returned three wickets in his subsequent spells. Leg spinner Sairaj Bahutule won an appeal for leg before against Andhra skipper M. S. K. Prasad and Morris gave importance to his allrounder's tag dismissing middle order Venugopal Rao leg before.

At 79 for five wickets, Andhra's potential to save the match looks improbable. There's nip in the air and Andhra has to accept the cold fact that it has been second best so far after two days.
