Barrington & Thilak make merry

By Our Sports Reporter

BANGALORE Nov. 28. Barrington Rowland (237 n.o.) and Thilak Naidu (167 n.o.) notched their highest individual scores and extended Karnataka's run feast at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday.

The two centurions helped the host declare at 598 for three on the second day of the Ranji Trophy plate division Group `B' match against Jammu and Kashmir. At close, the visitor was struggling at 77 for three and now has the uphill task of crossing 448 to avoid the follow-on.

Jammu and Kashmir had its lone bright spot earlier as Vijay Bharadwaj (17) dabbed at a Surinder Singh Bagal drifter down the leg side. Karnataka, resuming at the overnight 295 for two, however suffered no further alarms as Barrington (455b, 21x4) and Thilak (160b, 22x4, 1x6) posted an unfinished 281-run fourth wicket partnership.

Surinder Singh Bagal was the lone bowler to test the Karnataka duo, albeit briefly. A yorker topped by a bouncer unnerved Thilak but the wicket-keeper batsman had the last word. He worked Bagal off his hips past square-leg and then hit one past covers to signal another perfect day for batsmen.

Thilak also kept the fielders at third man and fine leg busy with his late cuts and deft glances and when the spinners flighted, he danced down and swung his bat in a neat arc. One such effort helped him hoist left-arm spinner Jugtar Singh over the sightscreen. The pull shot also provided rich pickings as the bowlers erred in their length.

Barrington, known for his correct and compact style, also kept pace with Thilak's run-a-ball innings. A harried rival skipper Vijay Sharma rotated his bowlers with no effect and only the host's declaration at tea provided some relief.

However the worry lines were back as openers Arshad Bhat and Fayaz Ahmed failed to stretch their 53-run partnership. Dodda Ganesh trapped Arshad while Venkatesh Prasad got his rhythm after switching over to the BEML end. The visitor was in shambles at close as Sunil Joshi's guiles proved fatal for Fayaz and Kavaljit Singh.

Brief scores: Karnataka 598 for three decl. (J. Arun Kumar 73, Barrington M. Rowland (not out) 237, Deepak Chougule 80, Thilak Naidu (not out) 167) vs Jammu and Kashmir 77 for three.
