Prominent Muslims condemn temple attacks

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI NOV. 30. Several prominent Muslims today condemned the attack on temples in Jammu and sought to impress upon the terrorist groups that their "barbaric deeds" had done immense harm to Islam and Muslims.

"We consider such heinous acts as not only gross violations of human rights, but absolutely against the basic teachings of Islam, which upholds the sanctity of human life and places of worship in all circumstances, including armed hostilities'', a joint statement said. The recent attack on the Raghunath Temple, they said, was one in the chain of events in Jammu, where vulnerable sections of the Hindu community were targeted only because they happen to be Hindus who are a minority in the State, ostensibly by those who consider themselves champions of the Muslims and Islam.

The signatories include Iqbal Ahmed, secretary-general of the Minorities Council, Saiyed Hamid, Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard University, Maulana Abdul Kareem Parikh, executive member of the Muslim Personal Law Board, M. Hamid Ansari, Vice-Chancellor, Jamaia Millia Islamia, Siraj Hussain, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard University, Rafiq Zakaraia, secretary of AIMMM, Moosa Raza, vice-president of the Movement for Empowerment of Muslim Indians, M. Manzoor Alam, Chairman, IOS, Syed Shahabuddin, president, Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, K.M. Khan, MP, and Mohammed Afzal, former MP.
