Indian Railways `B' triumphs

By Bobby Sinha

LUDHIANA DEC. 1. Indian Railways `B', represented by Manas Mukherjee, Pritish Kushari, Subir Majumdar, Rana Roy, Sumit Mukherjee and A.N. Banerjee, won its third Ruia title defeating Formidables, Delhi, in the final match by 73 IMPs (185-112).

Formidables, Delhi, consisting of Kiran Nadar, Subhash Gupta, Rajesh Dalal, K.R. Venkataraman, Sunil Choksi and B. Satyanarayan failed to clinch the issue despite figuring in the final for the fourth time (in 1997 Bangalore, 1999 Hyderabad, 2001 Kolkata and 2002 Ludhiana).

The 64-board final match was played in four sessions of 16 boards each. Railways took a commanding lead of 68 IMPs at the half way (32 boards).

Formidables reduced the lead by 20 IMPs (34-14) in the penultimate session. Facing a deficit of 48 IMPs and only 16 boards remaining for the game Formidables made a mess in the last session, squandering away 45 IMPs.

In the last session Railways added 25 IMPs (53-28) to win the game and title by 73 IMPs.

Railways had its maiden Ruia triumph in 1992 in Madras (now Chennai) defeating HCL, second success in 1997 in Bangalore defeating Formidables and the third one this year.

Railways has won in every fifth year (1992, 1997 and 2002).
