Sonia to hit Gujarat campaign trail on Dec. 3

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 1. The Congress campaign for the elections to the Gujarat Assembly is expected to move into top gear from Tuesday as the party chief, Sonia Gandhi, hits the campaign trail from December 3 in Vadodara. According to plans drawn up by her election managers, she will be back in the State on December 5 and 8, and possibly for another day.

Ms. Gandhi is scheduled to address the Vadodara rally after visiting the Ambaji shrine. She is likely to be accompanied by the AICC general secretary in-charge of Gujarat, Kamal Nath.

The Congress also plans to use the Chief Ministers of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Punjab in the campaign. They have been given charge of a region each. Many Congress Ministers from the adjoining States are already busy campaigning.

The Bollywood factor will constitute only a small element of the Congress campaign, in which the actor and Rajya Sabha MP, Dilip Kumar, and Govinda are likely to take part.

The party has done a considerable amount of spadework in anticipation of the polls with Ministers from Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh being assigned a district each. That the coming elections are important for the party is evident from the fact that several members of the Congress central command have been asked to pitch in. Prominent among them are Suresh Pachauri, Shrikant Jena and Pawan Bansal.
