Deora calls on Singapore PM

By P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE Dec. 2. The Singapore Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong, remains upbeat about his country's economic partnership with India, according to Murli S. Deora, Rajya Sabha member and president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee.

Mr. Deora, who called on Mr. Goh during the week-end as a non-governmental activist engaged in promoting India's ties with Singapore, said the talks ranged from bilateral economic issues to the current international situation.

Singapore's capabilities to help India improve its urban infrastructure and the overall bilateral equation were discussed in the new context of the city-state's recent initiative of creating a ``Network India''.

Mr. Deora was in Singapore on his way back home from Manila, where he had gone to attend meetings in his capacity as the vice-president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

He said that he called on the Asian Development Bank president, Tadao Chino, to impress upon the regional financial institution to extend grants to the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in a proactive fashion.
