By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI Dec. 2. The Allahabad High Court with 8.68 lakh cases of arrears as on March 1 this year stood first in the huge pendency of cases, followed by the Kerala High Court, 4.05 lakh cases and the Madras High court, 3.5 lakh cases.

This was stated by the Union Law Minister, Jana Krishnamurthy, in the Rajya Sabha in reply to a question on the pendency of cases in various High courts.

The other High Courts with huge pendency are: Bombay, 2.95 lakhs; Calcutta, 2.83 lakhs; Punjab and Haryana, 2.33 lakhs; Delhi, 1.78 lakhs; Andhra Pradesh, 1.46 lakhs; Gujarat, 1.41 lakhs and Rajasthan 1.32 lakhs.

In the Supreme Court, the arrears as on May 31, stood at 23,012 cases as against 1,04,936 cases as on December 31, 1991. He said the pendency had been reduced primarily through the better use of information technology, bunching of similar cases etc.

The computer network of the Supreme Court was upgraded to improve its efficiency and speed of disposal.

Explaining the steps being taken by the Government, he said the Centre had been requesting the Chief Justices of High courts to initiate proposals for filling the vacancies of Judges in High Courts.

Various steps had been taken by the High courts for a speedy disposal of cases, including classification and grouping of cases and computerisation of records in the High Courts.
