Nobility of thought

Sir,— It is notable on the part of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to cancel the Iftar party this year, and instead use the money for the welfare of orphanages during the holy month of Ramzan.

I appeal to the State Governors to cancel the lavish "At Homes" during Independence and Republic Days especially during cyclone, flood, drought, and earthquake. We must be spending not less than Rs. 3 to 4 crores every year on just eating, leave aside expenses on petrol, security, overtime, etc.

Certainly there are better ways for Raj Bhavans to celebrate national events.

Bharat R. Sant,

Hyderabad
