Complaint boxes to be put up at colleges

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC. 5. The Delhi police are installing suggestion and complaint boxes in educational institutions across the Capital to curb the growing menace of eve-teasing and harassment of women.

At Jawaharlal Nehru University, the police have decided to install two complaint boxes in consultation with the university authorities. This apart, the university authorities would also circulate pamphlets on the campus to educate the students about the presence of such boxes.

Similarly, at Delhi University's north campus sites have been identified for installation of complaint boxes.

The police maintained that they would not be deterred by false complaints in these boxes through anonymous letters. "Whether the complaint is genuine or not would come to light once it is verified,'' said a police officer.

However, another police officer suggested that the purpose for which the boxes have been installed should be clearly mentioned on them. At present, the boxes only have "complaint box'' written on them, without any indication about the nature of complaints. The decision to set up such boxes in educational institutions was taken at a meeting of the Delhi police with the National Commission of Women, college principals, deans and vice-chancellors about a fortnight ago.

To begin with, educational institutions like Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia and North and South campuses of the Delhi University were chosen for the experiment. If the experiment succeeds, the measure would be extended to other educational institutions.

The experiment was undertaken in order to ensure that the complainant who did not want to approach the police directly or come out in the open could inform the police about their predicament.

The complaint box would be opened by the Station House Officer of the area concerned on a daily basis and the complaints scrutinised by him. It may be noted that in many of the recent cases of crime against women, the victims and their families have not been forthcoming while dealing with the police in relation to the incidents.
