Five Mumbai batsmen were dismissed for zeroes and not before the appearance of the No. 7 in Oninder Gill in the middle that the home team looked like putting up a decent score. Gill and No. 9 Rohan Bagwe took Mumbai from 84 for seven (28th over) to 176 before Hayat broke the stand dismissing Bagwe for 48 runs. Gill faced 162 balls and struck five 4s to remain undefeated on 55, while Bagwe hit eight 4s in his 90-ball effort. Bagwe made it a fine first day for himself, demonstrating his allround ability. He bowled five overs and took two wickets for 19 runs. In the second semifinal played at Brabourne Stadium, Cricket Club of India, Punjab failed to capitalise on a sound start given by Sunny Sohal and Gurkirat Singh, who top scored with 71 runs. Punjab's first innings declined from 41 for no loss to 163 for 7 before Bharat Loomba and Gazinder Singh forged a stand of 46 for the eighth wicket.
