Writers vow to rid society of ills

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI Dec. 10. Writers and scholars have committed themselves to rid society of all ills by assessing and putting them before the public.

Renowned writer and Gnanpeeth awardee, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, has thrust upon the tribe of litterateurs the job of diagnosing the ailments and propagating their views among the like-minded citizens, though they were not vested with a curative role. He was addressing the author-student meet conducted by the English Department of Sri Padmavathi Women's University (SPMVV) and co-organised by the Indian Society of Authors, New Delhi and the Union ministry of HRD. He said that literature was a social institution, just like education and religion, and wanted more number of believers, in the form of readers, to tread the path.

He stressed that literature was always on the job of trying to understand man, like the subjects of physiology, anatomy and anthropology, but at a different plane. "We writers wade through deserts and forests of life in search of the truth about man, strolling into areas hitherto unexplored and toss questions at the nature, surroundings, society and, at times, on God.''

Tamil novelist, Sivasankari, said she was currently on the mission of making literature accessible to all by getting them translated into all major languages.

The writer, R.K. Murthi, the SPMVV Registrar, A. Gurumurthi, the Head of English Department, T.Asoka Rani, spoke.
