The general secretary of IAL, R. Harinatha Reddy, on Tuesday said that an advocate, Rajendra Prasad, was illegally arrested by the West Godavari police after foisting cases against him as he had complained against the police atrocities on a Dalit woman. He was confined in jail for 20 days. The High Court termed it violation of basic human rights. He said that the court came to a conclusion that the lawyer was victimised by the police wantonly and nullified the cases registered against him. The court also directed the Government to pay a compensation of Rs. 50,000 to the lawyer after deducting Rs. 25,000 each from the salaries of Sub-Inspectors of Narsapur and Chintalapudi, T. Tatarao and B. Ramakrishna, respectively. The court also ordered the Government to initiate disciplinary action against the two police officers, the IAL leader said. He sought to explain that if such was the plight of a lawyer who had been practicing for the last seven years and has been the convenor of Human Rights Forum, the position of the common man can be easily understood. Me requested the police to desist from foisting cases against innocent people and instead take action as per law.
