A high-level Congress delegation, led by the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Manmohan Singh, today called on the Election Commission members to demand the deployment of additional forces in the rural areas so that the people could vote fearlessly. The other members of the delegation were Ghulam Nabi Azad, Motilal Vora, H.R. Bhardwaj and Ratni Thomas. The delegation also drew the attention of the Election Commission to an advertisement issued by the VHP in a Gujarati newspaper urging Hindus to go out and vote in large numbers for the BJP. The EC assured the delegation that it was monitoring the situation closely and would take whatever steps were necessary to ensure free and fair polls in the State. Fears have been expressed in the Congress camp that with the election poised to go down to the wire, attempts would be made to foment trouble to prevent people from voting. "We have definite information that our opponents will try and create trouble in order to scare the people from going out to vote'' said Mr. Chaturvedi. Appealing to the people of Gujarat not to give in to the "terror tactics'', he urged the voters to go out and exercise their franchise''.
