Parliament nod for Cable TV Bill

By Anita Joshua

NEW DELHI DEC. 10 . The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2002, secured Parliament's approval today with the Rajya Sabha — where it had been stalled earlier for want of consensus — passing it unanimously after a three-hour discussion.

Initiating the discussion on the Bill, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sushma Swaraj, said the amendment was aimed at protecting the consumer interests as it allowed subscribers to choose channels and pay only for those opted for.

Also, it would enable the telecasters to assess the actual number of subscribers for each channel.

With many a member evincing concern about the cost of the set-top boxes through which the signals will be routed to cable homes, she hoped that their cost would come down once production began on a mass scale.
