DA hike for A.P. Govt. staff

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD DEC. 10. The Andhra Pradesh Government has enhanced dearness allowance (DA) to its employees and to the staff of local bodies and aided institutions by 2.45 per cent, effective from July 1, 2002.

The decision approving the increase was taken by the Cabinet at its meeting here this morning chaired by the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu. As a parallel benefit to village administrative officers and village servants, the meeting gave its nod sanctioning an ad hoc increase of Rs. 25 per month to them with effect from the same date.

At a press briefing later, the Information and Public Relations Minister, S. Chandramohan Reddy, said the arrears in both cases up to December 2002 would be credited into the GPF accounts and cash paid from January salary.

The additional burden to the ex-chequer on these counts would be Rs. 100.73 crores for the current financial year and Rs 151.09 crores per annum thereafter. Of this, the burden towards the village establishment would be Rs. 1.16 crores for this financial year and Rs. 1.74 crores annually thereafter, the Minister clarified.

It was also decided to effect an ad hoc increase of Rs. 25 per month instead of Rs. 20 to the village administrative officers and village servants whenever the State Government sanctioned DA enhancement to its staff, the Minister said. New water sources to be identified. Reviewing the drought situation, the Cabinet issued a directive to all top officials, including district Collectors, to identify alternative sources of drinking water for the coming summer wherever the present source shows signs of drying up.

Regarding drinking water, there should be no dearth of funds, the meeting felt, noting that Rs. 111.8 crores had been released for the purpose during the financial year so far. The directive stipulated the officials to monitor/review the situation every week.

The possible problem of supply in Hyderabad figured prominently during the discussions and it was decided to fill Osmansagar and Himayathsagar with Krishna water by completing the segment of the permanent Krishna water project on the outskirts to the two lakes on a warfooting. The Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board was asked to submit feasibility reports by tomorrow for immediate grounding of the works and their completion within three months. This arrangement was felt as a `must' for facing summer pending the permanent Krishna project which, however, would be completed in a year.

The Information and Public Relations Minister, S. Chandramohan Reddy, said that irrigation and agriculture officials were asked to ensure completion of rabi sowing during this month itself and harvesting by March-end in view of possible power/irrigation problems after this period.
