CHENNAI DEC. 11. It was a day when even a win had no meaning for the host. Posting a 46-run victory over Australia in the last league match of the Petro World Cup for the blind at the ICL-Guru Nanak College ground on Wednesday was a mere consolation for India.

Put in, India made 258, the chief contributor being captain and man of the match Ramkaran Sharma who scored 48 (52b, 1x4) and took two wickets. Rajendra Verma chipped in with 36 (29b, 5x4). India had to bundle out the Aussies below 207 and get a bonus point if it entertained any hopes of reaching the semifinals.

When T. Eagers thumped his hands while completing a single, the Aussies had touched the much-awaited target of 207, with four wickets and 1.2 overs in hand. They then had to simply play out the quota of 40 overs.

The hero of the Australian chase was 33-year-old Robert Farnham. The New Zealand-born Farnham made a patient 66 (91b) and put on a valuable 98 for the third wicket in 15.1 overs with Robert Raiteri.

Farnham, who works with the Brisbane City Council, was happy with his knock today. "I did not get a chance against South Africa as I came lower down the order," said Farnham. When Farnham (captain Peter Robinson was his by-runner) was run-out off a direct throw by Shekar Naik with the score reading 185 for four, the Aussies were well on course to reach 207.

Sri Lanka upsets England

In a shocking result, the Sri Lankans posted a convincing seven-wicket win over England at CPT-IP grounds. Their first victory, that too against a formidable opposition, should give them something to cheer about when they leave the Indian shores. The quiet and unassuming skipper Chandana Kumara Suriyaarachchi shaped the Lankan victory, remaining unbeaten on 94 (97b, 10x4).

The team that is getting better with every outing is Pakistan. Today, it cruised to a 61-run win over South Africa at SPIC-YMCA grounds.

The scores: India 258 in 32.2 overs (Rajendra Verma 36, Ramkaran Sharma 48) bt Australia 212 for seven in 40 overs (Robert Farnham 66, Robert Raiteri 39).

Pakistan 301 for eight in 40 overs (Tariq Samuel 131, Sulman Elahi 26, M. Ashraf Bhatti 42) bt South Africa 240 for six in 40 overs (E.M. Conradie 70, N.A. Meyer 47, R.P.E. Smal 28 not out).

England 262 in 38.4 overs (Timothy Guttridge 34, Adam Benjamin 53, Mark Pickup 67) lost to Sri Lanka 264 for three in 35 overs (Lakshan 57, Chandana Kumara Suriyaarachchi 94 not out, Peiris 44 not out).

Points table at the end of league (matches played, won, lost, match abandoned, bonus point, total points): Pakistan 5-4-1-1-0-17; 2. South Africa 5-2-2-1-1-11; 3. England 5-2-2-1-0-10 ; 4. Australia 5-2-2-1-0-10; 5. India 5-2-3-0-1-9; 6. Sri Lanka 5-1-3-1-0-6.

Semifinal line-up: Pakistan v England; South Africa v Australia.
