CRPF arrives, to assist STF

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE DEC. 13. In the light of the Government launching operations to nab the forest brigand, Veerappan, a company of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) arrived here on Thursday.

Sources said that the para-military force would be deployed in the forest area where Veerappan was believed to be operating, and that the force would coordinate with the operations of the Special Task Force (STF). The company attached to the New Delhi-based 140 Battalion would be in the city for a day or two.

The sources said that the company would be deployed in M.M. Hills and its services would be used as and when required. The force was equipped with INSAS rifle, a powerful weapon used in Guerilla warfare. The move comes in the light of the commencement of joint operations by the forces of the State and Tamil Nadu. The joint operations had been stalled following demands from the supporters of Nagappa as they perceived it would threaten his life.

Even the Union Home Minister, L.K.Advani, had promised the two States help in terms of men and material, and the sources said that the CRPF company was the first to arrive here. A demand for hi-tech gadgets and equipment would be placed before the Union Government after assessing the situation, and depending on the needs of the personnel. Meanwhile, police sources in Chamarajanagar District said that they were yet to recover five guns that had been taken away by a violent mob on Monday following the death of Nagappa. The mob attacked the Forest Department Office and the Inspection Bungalow at Cowdahalli before decamping with six guns of which one has been recovered.

Police have booked rioting cases in Hanur and Ramapura police limits that witnessed violence, arson and looting on Sunday and Monday.
