At the Cidade de Goa beach resort here, last year's runner-up China's Zhao Xue took a step towards finishing one better this time by devastating second-seeded Russian Tatiana Kosintseva in the top-board battle. Zhao Xue is now ahead among the girls with six points. In the boys' category, overnight leaders Chinese Ni Hua and Armenian Levon Aronian drew quickly on the top board to reach 5.5 points. As it turned out, none could catch up with the duo once Russian Vladimir Potkin and Chinese top seed Bu Xiangzhi played it safe on the adjacent board. On yet another day when there was not much to make the Indians smile, S. Satyapragyan produced a timely tactic to hold Hungarian Grandmaster Ferenc Berkes. Having earned a creditable draw with third-seeded Russian GM Yakovenko on Thursday, an upbeat Satyapragyan looked better off in today's match which opened with Sicilian Najdorf and got transposed to a regular version of English Attack. The Indian International Master made a draw offer in the middle-game which the World under-18 champion declined. Later, with Berkes' queen and rook menacingly placed on Satyapragyan's back-rank, the latter came up with fine rook sacrifice for a pawn and ensured a draw by perpetual queen-checks. Had Berkes tried any adventurous possibility, Satyapragyan could have well scored his maiden triumph over a GM. But the Hungarian quickly checked out the obvious continuation and offered a draw. The results (seventh round, Indians unless stated): Boys: Ni Hua (Chn) (5.5) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm) (5.5); Vladimir Potkin (Rus) (5) drew with Bu Xiangzhi (Chn) (5); Luke McShane (Eng) (5) drew with P.
