BJP calls for bandh in Uttaranchal

By Our Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN DEC. 14. The BJP has called for a State-wide bandh in Uttaranchal on Monday to protest against the police action on its cadres near the Vidhan Sabha here on Friday.

The Administration has filed an FIR against 40 top BJP functionaries for indulging in violence and stopping the police from doing their duty. This has been described as a vindictive move by the BJP.

A delegation led by the former Chief Minister, Bhagat Singh Koshiary, met the Governor, S. S. Barnala, today and sought a judicial probe into Friday incidents.

"Pelting stones on party workers and inflicting serious injuries on the local MLA, Trivender Singh Rawat, by the police who could have used batons and tear-gas shells to control the mob which was forced into defensive action by them (the police) speaks of a deeper conspiracy to muffle the public sentiments,'' Mr. Koshiary charged.

Mr. Rawat continues to be in a local nursing home where his condition is stated to be improving.

At a hurriedly called press conference, the Congress spokesman, Surendra Kumar, described the BJP action inside and outside the Vidhan Sabha on Friday as "unruly''.

The State Youth Congress cadres burnt an effigy of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, near Gandhi Park here to protest against delays in granting a special economic package to the State despite announcing the same.

This was countered by activists of the BJP and the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal who burnt the effigies of the Chief Minister, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, at several places.
