If there is no consensus among the district units of the KSP, the possibility of an election cannot be ruled out, S.M. Haradagatti, Belgaum District KSP President and General Secretary of sammelana told The Hindu here on Saturday. All the district units will be represented at the Shravanabelagola meeting and will name their candidates. If required, an election will be held the same day. The candidates that are being mentioned for the presidentship include the veteran journalist, Patil Puttappa; the noted theatre personality, Chandrashekar Kambar; the writer, N.K. Kulkarni; the former Vice-Chancellor, M.M. Kalburgi; and the noted writer, L. Basavaraj of Mysore. Significantly, even though many candidates are in the fray, there is complete unanimity among writers, poets, elected representatives, and all others concerned that the honour of presiding over the sammelana should go to a prominent personality from northern Karnataka. Thus, it is imperative to present a consensus candidate to ensure that it happens.
