According to the rank-holders, though around 2,550 persons had retired from service till September this year, only 760 retirement vacancies were filled by the Government. The number of retirement vacancies was set to go up by another 1,000, but there was no sign of the Government filling them up under the new policy regime. Hardly a few of the 3,500 rank-holders had received advice memo from the Government so far and if the present situation persisted, majority of the rank-holders would have to look elsewhere for employment, the rank-holders said. The rank-holders themselves had done a little research about the vacancies in various departments and had found that offices under the Revenue Department alone had as many as 251 vacancies till May 31 this year, followed by 141 vacancies in the Panchayat Department, 46 in the Registration Department, 35 in the Animal Husbandry Department, 18 in the Education Department and 25 vacancies in the Sales Tax Department. They also found that in several departments, vacancies were not being reported, says P. Aby, secretary of the LDC (Various) Rankholders' Association. The PSC had tried to do its bit for the job seekers. It had secured permission from the Government to extend the validity of ranklists by one year and used it to extend the validity of ranklists due for expiry from February 6, 2002, to February 4, 2003, till February 5, 2003. The PSC secretary, N. K. Krishnan Kutty, said in a notification that candidates would be issued advice memo relating to all the vacancies reported by the appointing authorities during the extended period as well.
