Also out of the 25 lakh metric tonnes of rice requested by the State, the Centre had so far released only three lakh tonnes, the Relief Commissioner, D.C. Rosaiah, stated here on Saturday. The demand for Rs. 1,860-crore cash relief and 25 tonnes of rice was made by the TDP Government after the State Assembly passed a unanimous resolution on November 13 requesting the Centre to consider the demand as 870 mandals had been declared drought-affected. However, the non-receipt of Central assistance would not in any way hamper the drought relief measures being undertaken by the State Government on its own, Mr. Rosaiah asserted. Mr. Rosaiah said the State Government had already released an amount of Rs. 205.55 crores for drough relief works in the State and the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, had already announced the release of another Rs 236 crores to tackle the situation. In reply to a question Mr. Rosaiah said as many as 5,287 irregularities had been detected in the "Food-for-work'' programme works, involving 456 Government employees and 435 non-officials.
