'Sangeetha Kala Nipuna' conferred on Kanyakumari

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI DEC. 14. The Governor, P. S. Ramamohan Rao, today paid tributes to Chennai for the rich fare it presents during the music season.

``What Vienna is to western music and Paris to master painting, Chennai is to carnatic music, he said, amidst applause.

It was becoming increasingly difficult to cope with the season in Chennai as the fare-music, dance and drama-provided was so wide and bewildering. ``You do not know what to choose and where to go'', he said inaugurating the 51st year art festival of the Mylapore Fine Arts Club. Chennai had set the trend in music and dance even 50 years ago. The number of sabhas was also increasing. His wife, P. Uma Rao, lit a traditional lamp to mark the inauguration.

The Governor conferred the title ``Sangeetha Kala Nipuna'' on A. Kanyakumari, violinist.

The citation said the title was being conferred ``as a mark of her personal distinction''. A gold medal and a cash award of Rs.5,000 were presented to the violinist.

B. R. Kumar, the Deputy Director-General, Prasar Bharati, and Bombay C. Lalitha offered felicitations.
